San Pedro, Calif., April 19, 2025 — Members of Division 6 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary proudly participated in the annual Turret Two Memorial Ceremony aboard the historic battleship Iowa, paying tribute to the 47 sailors who tragically lost their lives in the 1989 turret explosion.

On April 19, 1989, gunpowder bags prematurely detonated in the center Turret Two gun barrel during a training cruise off Puerto Rico, igniting additional gunpowder bags and killing the entire Turret 2 crew. The subsequent fire took 90 minutes to extinguish.

This year’s memorial was coordinated by Flotilla 06-06’s commander, David Padilla, and FSO-PV Johnathan Zastoupil, who worked in close partnership with the Battleship USS Iowa Museum and supporting veterans organizations. Their collaborative effort contributed to a moving and respectful ceremony that honored the fallen while highlighting the continuing role of the Auxiliary in community engagement and ceremonial support.

Auxiliary members from across Division 6 assisted as “side boys” during the ceremony. After the ceremony, all in attendance gathered in the wardroom for refreshments and a light lunch. Members were able to also speak with survivors of the incident, adding to their experience.

The memorial featured a wreath-laying ceremony, bell tolling, and remarks from guests, including former Iowa crew and local dignitaries. Auxiliary presence was both visible and meaningful, showcasing the professionalism and commitment of our members.

“Our involvement in events like these reflects the heart of the Auxiliary — service, honor, and remembrance,” Padilla said. “It was humbling to be part of a moment that brings healing and tribute to so many.”

“The Iowa is more than a museum; she’s a living symbol of naval history,” Zastoupil said. “Being entrusted with helping preserve that legacy through this memorial is a privilege we don’t take lightly.”
