A vexing question commonly asked of Auxiliarists by both recreational and commercial mariners is “How can I get rid of old safety flares?”

How indeed? There’s often no easy solution, but flare collection events are periodically held in Southern California. Rick Latronico, SO-PA and member of Flotilla 6-1, explains:

On June 22, Flotilla 6-1 set up a public affairs booth at the Expired Marine Flare Collection Event held at the Newport Beach city yard.

This event was sponsored by several state and local agencies including the Newport Beach, Orange County, the California Coastal Commission, and California Department of Parks and Recreation. It was a well-promoted and well-coordinated event.

Members from Flotilla 6-3 and 6-1, including Rick Weiss, Rick Latronico, Paul Stephan and John Doogan, were on hand during the entire event, welcoming captive passenger car and truck motorists who were first escorted to the flare disposal area and then had to stop at our PA booth before exiting.

After depositing their expired flares, each vehicle — 72 in all — were welcomed by USCG Aux Public Affairs personnel. They were handed information on upcoming PE classes, along with copies of the Federal Boating Regulations, America Waterway Watch materials and a plethora of other safe boating information.

Also given away were free oil-absorbent fuel bibs, a discount electronic marine flare coupon and California Dockwalker kits with information on spill prevention and response.

This was a successful event marketed directly to Orange County boat owners by agencies that had a stake in the outcome.

It was extremely worthwhile for the Auxiliary to have a presence, as it was a great opportunity to partner with several key, high-profile boating organizations that are perfectly aligned with the mission of the USCG Auxiliary.

My thanks go out to all the members who made this event happen!
